Pune has been ranked as the fourth most congested city in the world, highlighting the growing traffic woes in the city. According to a recent global report, Pune joins two other Indian cities, Kolkata and Bengaluru, which have been ranked second and third, respectively.
The report names Barranquilla in Colombia as the most congested city worldwide, with vehicles moving at an average speed of just 10.3 mph. Kolkata, known for its dense population and limited road infrastructure, and Bengaluru, India’s tech hub, notorious for its gridlocks, round off the top three.
Pune’s ranking reflects the city’s rapid urbanization and population growth, leading to increased vehicle usage and insufficient road infrastructure to handle the load.
Efforts are underway to improve traffic conditions in these cities, with initiatives like metro expansions, smart traffic management systems, and urban planning projects being rolled out. However, experts emphasize that a shift towards public transportation and sustainable urban mobility is essential to address the congestion crisis effectively.
