The Maharashtra government has announced that Republic Day will no longer be a holiday for schools. Instead, students will actively participate in activities that promote national pride, starting from January 26, 2025.
Circular Details
According to a circular issued by the School Education Department, all government and private schools across the state must organize day-long patriotic celebrations. The circular emphasized fostering a sense of national pride among students by engaging them in various competitions and events.
The circular stated, “On January 26, we should instill in students a sense of pride in our nation’s history, rich culture, and promising future. From 2025 onwards, Republic Day will be celebrated with various activities in schools of all mediums.”
Mandatory Activities for Republic Day
Schools are required to host eight key events on Republic Day, all centered around patriotic themes:
- Prabhat Pheri (morning march) following the flag hoisting.
- Elocution competition.
- Poetry recitation.
- Dance competition.
- Drawing competition.
- Essay writing.
- Sports events.
- Patriotic exhibitions.
District education officers and inspectors will oversee the implementation of these directives.
Criticism and Concerns
The decision has sparked criticism from educators and activists. Bhausaheb Chaskar, a teacher activist, expressed concern over the added burden on students, stating, “Students already have numerous events to observe in schools, which often clash with their curriculum. Republic Day has always been marked with celebrations; dedicating the entire day is unnecessary.”
Republic Day Parade Preparations
In preparation for the 76th Republic Day celebrations, defence personnel recently participated in a full-dress rehearsal at Kartavya Path, Delhi. Security has also been heightened by Delhi Police, with increased patrolling and vigilance in markets and other public areas to ensure safety during the festive season.
