1st Suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome Death in Maharashtra; Pune Cases Spike to 101

Maharashtra has reported its first suspected death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), with the patient succumbing to complications at a private hospital in Solapur. Meanwhile, Pune has seen an alarming rise in GBS cases, now totaling 101, sparking concerns among health authorities.

Key Highlights

  • First Suspected Death: A 40-year-old male patient passed away after severe breathing difficulties.
  • Spike in Cases: Pune recorded 28 new cases within 24 hours, bringing the total to 101.
  • 16 Patients on Ventilators: Children and elderly individuals are the most affected groups.

Details of the Fatal Case

The deceased patient had initially been admitted to the ICU on January 18 with symptoms of diarrhea, cough, and cold. After some improvement, he was shifted to a regular room but later developed breathing difficulties and was readmitted to the ICU, where he passed away.

Doctors from Solapur Government Medical College, who conducted the autopsy, suspect GBS as the initial cause of death. Viscera samples have been sent for detailed analysis, with results expected in 15 days.

GBS Cases in Pune on the Rise

Pune is witnessing an unprecedented surge in GBS cases. The city has typically reported only one or two cases per month. The current outbreak has led to 16 patients requiring ventilator support, including:

  • Children under 9 years: 19 cases.
  • Elderly (50-80 years): 23 cases.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, a known trigger for GBS.

Water Contamination Concerns

Authorities have intensified water testing in affected areas, including around Khadakwasla Dam, Pune’s main water source. Tests revealed high levels of E. coli bacteria in a nearby well, though its active use has not been confirmed.

Health workers have surveyed over 25,000 households to identify additional cases and trace the outbreak’s source.

Understanding Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)

GBS is a rare condition where the immune system attacks the nerves, often triggered by bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms include weakness, paralysis, and other complications.

  • Recovery: Around 80% of patients can walk independently within six months, though some may take longer to fully recover.
  • Treatment Cost: GBS treatment is expensive, with immunoglobulin (IVIG) injections costing approximately ₹20,000 each.

Relief for Patients

To alleviate financial stress, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar has announced that government hospitals will provide GBS treatment free of cost.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement measures to prevent further spread of the outbreak.
