A Pune-based pub, High Spirits Cafe, sparked controversy by sending condoms and ORS packets along with New Year party invitations, leading to public outrage and police intervention.
The incident began when the pub management sent goodie bags containing helmets, condoms, and ORS to around 40 regular patrons as part of their party invites. According to the advisory included in the invitation, the gesture aimed to promote safety during New Year celebrations, urging guests to wear helmets, stay hydrated, and avoid drunk driving.
However, the move faced criticism after one invitee shared pictures of the gift pack on Facebook, leading to widespread public outrage. Following this, the pub decided to cancel the event.
Mundhwa Police, led by Senior Inspector Nilkanth Jagtap, recorded statements from the pub management and invitees. “The intent was to ensure safety during celebrations, but it was misinterpreted by some,” Jagtap explained.
Complaint by Maharashtra Youth Congress
The matter escalated when Akshay Jain, General Secretary of the Maharashtra Youth Congress, filed a formal complaint. Jain stated, “We are not against nightlife or pub culture, but this is a cheap publicity stunt. We have requested the Pune Police Commissioner to take action to ensure such incidents are not repeated.”
The police have issued notices and launched an investigation to understand the motive behind the gesture.
