Pune: In a tragic accident on Friday evening, two BCA students lost their lives when a cement mixer truck overturned and crushed their scooter at Vadjainagar Corner on Hinjewadi-Maan Road. The victims were identified as Pranjali Yadav (21) and Ashlesha Gawande (21), both students of a prominent private college in Pune.
Details of the Accident
According to Senior Inspector Kanhaiya Thorat of the Hinjewadi police, the accident occurred around 5 PM. The women were riding their scooter towards Hinjewadi when the incident happened. CCTV footage from the area showed that the truck was turning left at high speed when it lost balance and tipped over, crushing the scooter and its riders beneath it.
One officer noted that the woman riding the scooter noticed the truck approaching dangerously fast and attempted to swerve, but the vehicle overturned, leaving no room to escape.
Narrow Escape for Another Scooter Rider
Another individual driving a scooter narrowly avoided the accident. Witnesses reported that the rider stopped his scooter upon noticing the falling truck, abandoned it, and ran to safety. The truck skidded further and came to a halt near the abandoned scooter.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Inspector Thorat and his team arrived at the scene soon after the incident. “With the help of three cranes, we managed to lift the overturned truck and retrieve the bodies,” Thorat said. The deceased were sent to Aundh Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The 22-year-old driver of the cement mixer truck was taken into custody and charged with causing death by negligence. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
